Symphonic Band

(Grades 9-12)

This band will explore intermediate to advanced musical selections and techniques. In the fall, the band will perform as the Bear River Pep Band at football games. It will perform as the Bear River Marching Band at local parades and regional competitions. The Symphonic Band will hold several performances including the “Sounds of the Season” and “Bruins of Note” concerts and the Arts Department Showcase. The Symphonic Band also performs at the Golden Empire (or similar) Music Festival and often undertakes a performance tour in the Spring. Each member of this group will have the opportunity to perform a solo or small ensemble selection during the Solo and Ensemble Festival at Sacramento State University. Students will also be encouraged to audition for various honor band opportunities throughout the year. We will be studying music theory with opportunities to arrange and compose – and to perform that music. All members of this ensemble are expected to practice daily outside of class, maintain an online journal, and be listening regularly to wind band recordings.

BR Voices

(Grades 9-12)

An all-grade mixed chorus (SATB) where students will sing a variety of literature from all stylistic periods. There will be many performance opportunities throughout the year. BR Voices will hold several performances including the “Sounds of the Season”, “Fantasy of Stars”, and “Bruins of Note” concerts and the Arts Department Showcase. BR Voices also performs at the Golden Empire (or similar) Music Festival and often undertakes a performance tour in the Spring. Emphasis will be placed on fundamentals of vocal technique, sight singing, music theory, and history. All members of this ensemble are expected to practice daily outside of class and be listening regularly to choral recordings.

Jazz Band

(Grades 9-12)
[Co-requisite: enrollment in Symphonic Band]

Jazz Band is an auditioned, performance intensive course for the advanced musician. A broad sample of jazz music from various styles and periods will be performed in a Big Band format. Students should demonstrate proper stylistic technique, articulations, blend and balance, intonation, improvisation, and facility on his/her instrument. The Jazz Band will perform at many events throughout the year, including our own “Swing Into The Night” Big Band Dance” as well as the “Sounds of the Season” and “River Dance” concerts. Away from campus, they perform at the Folsom, Reno, East Bay, and/or Santa Cruz Jazz Festivals, local service club meetings, and more. Members of this ensemble are expected to practice daily outside of class beyond their practice time for Symphonic Band, maintain an online journal, and be listening to jazz recordings regularly.

Starlite Express

(Grades 9-12)
[Co-requisite: Audition, enrollment in at least one period of a Band or Choir ensemble.]

Starlite Show Choir is an exciting, energy-filled, auditioned ensemble which will require singing, dancing, showmanship, and no small amount of sequins! It will also require commitment beyond the time put into your traditional ensemble. Starlite Show Band is an auditioned, high-powered stage band that performs live on stage with the choir. Band members play a variety of pop/rock music and will be called upon to contribute visually to the show through some light choreography. Starlite Express is host to the annual “Fantasy of Stars” Invitational. Starlite will perform at many events throughout the year, including our own “Sounds of the Season” concert, “Fantasy of Stars” Choral Invitational; and “River Song” concert. We are often asked to perform for local service club meetings, and often travel to take part in music festivals throughout the state. Members of this ensemble are expected to practice daily outside of class beyond their practice time for their primary ensemble. Starlite has a non-traditional rehearsal schedule – meeting prior to the traditional school day Monday, Wednesday evenings, and the occasional Saturday.
